Skin Comes First: How to Prep Your Skin for Make-Up

When it comes to applying make-up, it’s important to always put skin first. After all, there’s only so much a good foundation and concealer can cover-up. To help you on your journey to better, more beautiful-looking skin, we’ve put together the essential guide to prepping your skin for make-up. From exfoliating to priming, let’s help get you picture-perfect every time.

Cleanse

Cleanse

Before you reach for your foundation brush, it’s time to thoroughly cleanse your face. Which cleanser you use totally depends on your skin type. For those of you who struggle with oily, spot-prone skin it’s best to use a blemish clearing face wash that works to add balance. For dry skin, why not try an oil-based cleanser? And if you have sensitive skin, try a super-gentle foaming wash that cleanses without drying your face out.

Exfoliate

Exfoliate

Dull and rough skin? For beautiful skin, try exfoliating once or twice a week. Not only will it smooth your skin, it’ll help your make-up to sit better. Wondering which exfoliator is the best for your skin? Here at Avon we supply a variety of exfoliators, from scrubs to resurfacing peel pads that have been formulated with the gently resurfacing, glycolic acid.

Tone

Tone

After cleansing, always remember to apply an alcohol-free toner. This will work to wipe away any remaining dead skin cells and impurities, leaving your face sparkling and ready to face the day.

Moisturise

Moisturise

It’s really important to always moisturise after cleansing; not only does it replenish the moisture lost, it also helps to protect your skin from damage.

Once again, the type of moisturiser you use will depend on a variety factors, from skin type to your age. It also depends on the type of make-up style you’re going for. For example, if you want your skin to look dewy, you should use a rich and hydrating face cream that’ll keep your skin soft and supple.

Prime

For a photo-ready finish, you should always start with a quality face primer. Not only will it blur the look of fine lines, pores and unwanted shine, but it’ll help to keep your foundation in place. And if you’re looking to wear lipstick, it might be worth applying a lip primer too, to help plump out your lips and create a smoother-looking finish.

Now all that’s left to do is apply your favourite make-up and spend the day looking fabulous. And if you fancy getting your hands on some more skincare inspiration, be sure to check out our full online collection here.
