Warmer, woodier scents are a trend among the latest fragrances, following from years of fresh, green perfumes, according to an expert.
Janetta Mackay, writing for the New Zealand Herald, says as well as these earthy styles, florals also remain popular.
"Though it's hardly a plus for a true perfume fan, many modern fragrances are rather nondescript, inoffensive blends, making them fairly safe options," she suggests.
When buying the latest fragrances as a gift, it is best to have an idea of what may appeal, although women often like to be surprised, Ms Mackay says.
In addition, she advises that "appearance does matter", so if in doubt about what to buy, choosing a perfume from an established brand or one which has an attractive bottle is also a good idea.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Jones, writing for the Dallas Beauty Treatments Examiner, recently suggested that women should experiment with the latest fragrances to find the right scent for them.
