Ladies should adapt their use of beauty essentials in the colder weather, using a moisturising body wash in the shower rather than taking a long bath, according to an expert.

Consultant dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe told Metro that flaky skin, which women often suffer from in autumn and winter, is worsened by spending ages in a hot bath.

"Long, hot soaks will only make the problem worse. Get used to taking shorter showers with warm water and swap your normal bar of soap for a body wash to add moisture," he said.

Dr Lowe also recommended to the newspaper that women pat their body rather than rubbing it, then use a dry skin cream while their body is still wet to lock in moisture.

He went on to suggest that women use a moisturising wash and apply a protective hand cream.

His advice follows a similar recommendation by talent agency Models Direct, which advised women to apply dry skin cream as soon as they step out of the shower or bath to keep their body in top condition.
