PVC leggings appear to be among the latest must-have fashion accessories, with plenty of celebrities adding plastic to their wardrobe.

X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, her mentor Cheryl Cole, style icon Victoria Beckham and pop star Rhianna have all stepped out in the skin-tight item.

Perhaps the stars are thinking economically in the credit crunch, as PVC leggings are a useful little number for dressing up or down, with a long t-shirt for the day or a glitzy dress for the night.

Alexandra Burke's star is rising in the fashion and political stakes, with prime minister Gordon Brown saying he will be buying her single as a Christmas present.

The London songstress, who wowed audiences in the X Factor after a show-stopping duet with pop diva Beyonce, going on to beat boyband JLS for the reality TV show title, has already broken the record for the fastest-selling download ever.
